United Fresh Senior Vice President of Food Safety and Technology Dr. David Gombas discusses on-farm food safety practices with United States Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg during a 2010 tour of a Salinas, Calif., strawberry field. United Fresh has a long history of collaboration with FDA and other federal agencies on food safety matters.

There are no more important issues for the produce industry today than the safety of our food. United Fresh is your partner in helping make sure you have the resources to grow and market the safest possible fresh fruits and vegetables. No matter what stage of the produce supply chain, United Fresh is here to help members with their food safety needs.

United Fresh works closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and local health authorities on food safety. Your association worked with FDA and USDA to help develop their 1998 "Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables". This remains the primary government guidance document for fresh fruit and vegetable safety.

Our food safety efforts are led by Dr. David E. Gombas, senior vice president food safety & technology.  Our staff works closely with the  Food Safety & Technology Council, which includes scientists and quality control experts from member grower-shippers, fresh-cut processors, wholesalers, retailers and allied organizations.
