Updates From The Senate

Jan 31, 2017

On March 30, 2017, the Senate Agriculture Committee favorably reported the nomination of former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue to become the next Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture. Secretary-designate Perdue was largely supported by the agriculture industry. As of this writing, there is no word on when the nomination will be voted on by the full Senate as next week floor debate will be dominated by the nomination of Supreme Court pick Neil Gorsuch with the Senate then going into recess for two weeks.

On Monday, March 27 the Trump Administration officially sent paperwork to the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee for consideration of Scott Gottlieb to serve as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Scott Gottlieb, who also formerly served as a top FDA official during the Bush Administration, is a partner at New Enterprise Associates which has strong ties to the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. A Senate HELP Committee hearing for his nomination has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 5 at 10 a.m.
