United Fresh Applauds House of Representatives for Renewing Trade Promotion Authority

Jun 18, 2015

“United Fresh applauds the House of Representatives for renewing Trade Promotion Authorization (TPA), and we thank Speaker Boehner for his leadership and commitment to moving such critical legislation through what has been a rather complex legislative process. Trade agreements are critical to the livelihoods of U.S. fruit and vegetable producers. For example, in 2013, trade agreements resulted in $4.3 million of fresh peach and nectarine exports and $40 million of table grape exports to Australia, alone. Much of the rhetoric around TPA has centered on the fact that it gives the President authority to negotiate trade agreements and present them to Congress. But, the reality is that TPA, as well as other potential trade partnerships, will open markets, create economic opportunities at home and abroad and promote trade balance for the U.S. fruit and vegetable industry. We urge the Senate to also pass TPA and look forward to working with the President, USDA and other agencies to enact agreements that remove market access barriers and provide as many opportunities for fresh fruit and vegetable producers as possible.”
