Produce Safety Immersion Program Class One

 

Judy Amaya is a Food Safety Specialist for Robinson Fresh, with over 10 years of experience in the Food Safety industry. Judy is a University of Florida graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition. Starting a career as a third-party auditor for multi-department supermarkets, fast food chains, and restaurants, Judy  went on to work in the standards certifications field for food safety and supply chain sustainability of coffee, chocolate, sugar, fish meal, orange pellets and ethanol, to name a few. Now, Judy is fully involved with corporate food safety compliance assurance for produce commodities.

Aaron Anderson is a Food Safety Specialist at Pacific International Marketing. He has worked in agriculture for over 10 years, with food safety always being the focus. Aaron is excited for the opportunity to continue his food safety education and learn from the Immersion Program

 

Nancy Arrieta is a Food Safety Manager and has worked in the produce industry with Lipman Family Farms for 5 years. In her free time, Nancy enjoys working out and spending time with her girls, which inspire her on a daily basis. The motto she is currently living by is “The key to success is the focus on goals not on obstacles. I am ready to succeed with whatever comes my way, because the sky is the limit.”

John T. Baillie was born and raised in the Salinas Valley and graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in global agribusiness. John resides in Scottsdale as the the Food Safety Lead for Amerifresh.


Deadra Barnett was introduced to the food industry over 15 years ago starting in frozen foods and moving into the confectionery industry. Deadra has been with DNO Produce since 2017. Some of her experience includes production management, quality and food safety management, ERP systems, R&D, and regulatory compliance. Deadra is looking forward to gaining insights, learning from others in our industry, and meeting new people throughout the year with the Produce Safety Immersion team.

Isabel Chamberlain is on the Legal & Compliance team at Plenty and manages the company’s Food Safety Program. She has a BS in International Ag Development from the University of California Davis. Since 2014, she has been immersed in the vertical farming world and is deeply passionate about the current problems in our food system. She is an advocate for using technology and the power of science as a means for a sustainable future and hopes to build a farm on Mars someday.

Shelby Chih has been in food safety for approximately eight years, three of which have been in produce as the Supply Chain Quality Manager, PCQI at Renaissance Food Group. Shelby acknowledges this industry provides daily challenges and continuously pushes her out of her comfort zone. Shelby looks forward to learning from her peers and mentors throughout 2020 and the years to come!

Ken Dreyer joined Madison Chemical in 2014 working in various positions, until moving into the Sales Manager role in 2016. He brings over 13 years of Food Safety experience in diverse roles. He also served 8 ½ years In the United States Army. Ken drives the day to day business of our nationwide sales team. He received his education from Michigan State University and has been an active member of the United Fresh Food Safety Council since 2016.

Kristie Goad is the Food Safety and Quality Manager for Taylor Farms Tennessee North in Covington, KY. Kristie started her career in Quality Assurance 10 years ago in a dual USDA/FDA plant. She has been with Club Chef/Taylor Farms since March of 2018.  Kristie helped guide the plant towards SQF Quality Code certification for the first time and has since worked diligently to improve processes and efficiencies within the Quality Department. Kristie’s vast knowledge of USDA regulations will help move the plant toward USDA certification in 2020, while still maintaining FSMA regulatory standards for the produce processing lines. Kristie hopes to broaden her knowledge of the produce industry during this program. 

Jackie Hawkins leads all functions of BrightFarms’ Food Safety Department, including the development, implementation, and management of food safety systems. When she’s not traveling between greenhouses, she is at home with her husband and two wonderful kids. Jackie graduated from Oregon State University in 2015 with a degree in Environmental Science.

Taylor Livingston is the Food Safety and Packing Operations Administrative Assistant for Titan Farms in Ridge Spring, SC. Taylor maintains the HACCP based Food Safety plan and FSMA compliance for all commodities in South Carolina and Florida. Her role allows her to work alongside quality and packing operations team members in order to achieve one common goal: producing safe, high quality, fresh fruits and vegetables.  After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2017 with a degree in Exercise Science and Allied Health, she was focused on a career in healthcare. Shortly after graduation, an opportunity to join the produce industry presented itself. Taylor has now been a part of the Titan team for two years. She also serves as member of the South Carolina Food Safety Task Force. 

Kinsey Porter is the Compliance Coordinator for North Bay Produce, Inc., headquartered in Traverse City, MI. Kinsey discovered her passion for food safety while performing undergraduate research at North Carolina State University and has strived to promote and educate others about food safety ever since. After graduating from Clemson University with her Master’s degree in Food, Nutrition, and Culinary Sciences, Kinsey began working for North Bay Produce in 2018. At North Bay Produce, Kinsey is responsible for ensuring all suppliers are compliant with company, customer, and government expectations and regulations and communicating supplier compliance to customers. It is her ultimate goal to protect consumers, the food supply, and the integrity of the produce industry.

Kristina Schoen has worked in the food safety for eight years, and joined the produce industry in 2015 when she became Food Safety Specialist, and recently, Food Safety Manager of Wish Farms. Kristina greatly enjoys finding solutions to aid growers and facilities in compliance with the regulations. 


Christopher Wright is a Food Safety Specialist working with Duncan Family Farms and has been working at the New York location for three years. Christopher assists with 3rd party audits for all locations and supervises the compost operation in New York.

Daniel Wu is a Food Safety Director at Giorgi Mushroom. He has a Ph.D. in Food Engineering, with over 13 years of extensive experience in food safety, QA/QC, research and development in the food industry. Daniel has expertise in thermal and non-thermal processing technologies, and is HACCP and SQF certified and certified PCQI.

 

Program Mentors

Donna Lynn Browne began her career in produce food safety after graduating from Cal Poly SLO in 1989.  Her first job was a research microbiologist at the Dole R&D Technical Center in San Jose, CA. She then moved on to positions with Safeway Manufacturing and Dole Fresh Vegetables as a Quality Supervisor then Manager.  She then operated for 8 years a very successful business as a food safety consultant; her main clients were Taylor Farms and River Point Farms.  Her current position is Director of Food Safety and Social Responsibility with Naturipe Farms, which she has enjoyed for the past 6.5 years.  She has always enjoyed working with farmers, directly helping them understand what is needed for true food safety.  She holds a degree in Microbiology, MS International Food Law and has numerous food safety certifications (SQF, HACCP, GLOBALG.A.P, PCQI, FSVP, etc).  

De Ann Davis PhD, DABT, joined Commercial Food Sanitation (CFS) in July 2019. Prior to joining CFS, De Ann spent four years in the fresh-cut produce industry, first as the VP Quality Assurance and Food Safety at Earthbound Farm at DanoneWave (2015-2017) and most recently, as the VP Food Safety and Quality at Church Brothers Farms (2017-2019).

De Ann received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Chemistry from Point Loma Nazarene University and her PhD in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University. She is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (1996 to present). De Ann holds several committee appointments within the produce industry, including recently serving as the Chair of the Board of Advisors for the Center for Food Safety, University of Georgia. In 2018, De Ann was appointed to the USDA National Advisory Committee for the Microbiological Criteria for Food.

Suresh DeCosta joined Lipman Family Farms as Director of Food Safety in April 2016. Prior to joining Lipman, he worked at McDonalds Corporation as Food Safety Lead for agricultural products.  Suresh is a recognized subject matter expert with the ability to lead cross-functional groups of suppliers, customers and produce industry representatives. He has broad food science industry experience including product development, beverage formulation, food irradiation, coffee blend management, good agricultural practices and fresh cut processing. He leverages his holistic understanding of supply chain from farm to fork to mitigate food safety risk, with an awareness of the impact to commercialization. 

Suresh received a M.S. in Food Science from Chapman University and a B.S. in Environmental Science from Slippery Rock University.

Cheryl Enlow is the current Chair of the United Fresh Food Safety Council, in addition to her role as Vice President of Quality & Food Safety for Renaissance Food Group, a fresh food and fresh-cut processor.  Her degree in Food Technology from Iowa State University led her to production and quality assurance roles with Green Giant, Fresh Express and Safeway prior to joining RFG.  Produce has been the primary focus of her lengthy career.
Walter Ram is Vice President of Food Safety at the Giumarra Companies and is responsible for food safety and regulatory affairs for the company’s twelve divisions and growers throughout the US and in sixteen other countries.  He is a past chairman of the United Fresh Food Safety & Technology Council, and was named The Packer Importer of the Year in 2012, received the United Fresh Technical Award in 2013, and was the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas Member of the Year in 2014.
