Produce Industry Learns From America’s First Leader

Mar 16, 2018

The United Fresh Produce Association, in partnership with the George Washington Leadership Institute, hosted the inaugural Revolutionary Leadership Conference last week in Washington, DC, and Mount Vernon, VA. Attendees spent a full day at Washington’s Mount Vernon estate where scholars and leadership experts took participants deep inside Washington’s character, motivations, and actions.

Through thought-provoking presentations, engaging case studies, and behind-the-scenes experiences at Mount Vernon, the curriculum seamlessly blended the lessons of history with the leadership challenges of today. The Mount Vernon experience ended with a private tour of the mansion and grounds including exclusive access to the rare documents housed in the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington, followed by dinner at the Mount Vernon Inn.

The event concluded at breakfast the following morning where Ron Midyett, President of Apio; Kaari Stannard, President, New York Apple Sales, Inc.; and Jeff Cady, Director of Produce & Floral, Tops Friendly Markets; all graduates from United Fresh’s Produce Industry Leadership Program of differing classes, provided attendees with an understanding of their own leadership styles and drew parallels of the lessons learned from George Washington to their own leadership strategies.
