The Trump administration recently offered contradictory announcements about the status of U.S. participation in the North American Free Agreement (NAFTA), all within 24 hours. On April 25, the White House announced the president was considering issuing an executive order leading the United States’ withdrawal from the agreement. This announcement created a great deal of consternation within the agriculture community. United Fresh is a member of the U.S. Food and Agriculture Dialogue for Trade which immediately issued a statement emphasizing the importance of NAFTA to American agriculture.
Faced with considerable backlash and following a reminder from Sectary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue about the impact such a move would have on agriculture, as well conversations with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, President Trump reversed himself and announced that instead, the United States will pursue a renegotiation of the agreement. United Fresh will continue to work diligently with our industry partners and the administration that our government pursues policies that help to keep export markets open.
