Guidance Documents
United Fresh works closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and local health authorities on food safety. Your association worked with FDA and USDA to help develop their 1998 "Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables". This remains the primary government guidance document for fresh fruit and vegetable safety.
Following that publication, United's Production and Quality Assurance Council (the predecessor to the United Fresh Food Safety & Technology Council) developed its own member resource document -- Food Safety Auditing Guidelines: Core Elements of Good Agricultural Practices for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables -- to be used as a companion tool with FDA's overall guidance document. In addition, that publication includes a Food Safety Questionnaire for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, which can be used by grower-shippers or produce buyers to quickly assess key questions related to production safety. These documents are an excellent reference tool for minimizing microbial hazards through the use of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for fresh fruits and vegetables.
In November 2005, United Fresh partnered with the Produce Marketing Association to create Commodity Specific Food Safety Guidelines for the Melon Supply Chain an essential reference document that provides the fresh melon industry with the most current food safety information available.
