United Fresh Commends Rep. Farr's Spinach Legislation
December 8, 2006
United Fresh applauded legislation introduced this week by Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA) aimed at addressing critical food safety needs within the produce industry following September's spinach E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak. The "Spinach Research and Recovery Act," (H.R. 6379) bill was introduced on the House floor on Wednesday, with 11 co-sponsors. "We appreciate the leadership Congressman Farr has taken to help us identify both important food safety research challenges and the need to help spinach growers and processors whose products were not implicated in the outbreak, but suffered serious losses in response to FDA's blanket consumer advisory," said Robert Guenther, United Fresh senior vice president of public policy. "As Congress adjourns this week, we expect the legislation will likely be considered early next year at the beginning of the 110th Congress."
