As the first session of the 110th Congress adjourned Wednesday night, House and Senate leadership listed their accomplishments and gave hints of their priorities for next year. Several important pieces of legislation were included on their lists of accomplishments: the House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill and the omnibus spending bill that will fund the federal government over the next year. Both the House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill include unprecedented investments in the produce industry, and the FY09 omnibus spending bill includes immediate funding for the Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program and the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. “We commend the Congress for working in a bipartisan fashion, and passing legislation that makes significant strides to fund and implement policy priorities for the fruit and vegetable industry,” said Robert Guenther, United Fresh Senior Vice-President of Public Policy.
