By a vote of 79-14, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the Farm Bill today, called the Food, Energy & Security Act of 2007, which includes unprecedented advances in funding and policy priorities for the fruit and vegetable industry. United Fresh, serving as the secretariat, has helped spearhead the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance, a coalition of more than 100 specialty crop organizations which was instrumental in generating bipartisan Congressional support to advance produce industry priorities. Several fruit and vegetables industry priorities, including expansion of the USDA Fruit & Vegetable Snack Program, expansion of Specialty Crop Competitiveness projects, investment in combating invasive plant pests and diseases, enhanced trade assistance, and new investments in research are included in the Senate Farm Bill. United Fresh and the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance will continue to work with Congressional leadership as the Farm Bill now advances to conference where the House and Senate versions will be reconciled.
