United Fresh submitted comments to USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) this week on the potential benefit of national marketing agreements or marketing orders for leafy greens. AMS asked for public comments on the pros and cons of such agreements in an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (temporary difficulty accessing the server) earlier this fall. United Fresh provided an extensive analysis of potential marketing agreements and orders that might be organized by growers and/or handlers of leafy greens. The association also suggested that AMS evaluate all the tools it has that can help industry achieve its food safety goals, and how the different options may provide varying benefits to the industry. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with USDA in exploring the challenges and benefits of different program options that could help the industry achieve its food safety goals,” said Dr. David Gombas, United Fresh senior vice president for food safety and technology. “Thanks to the many United Fresh members who provided input into shaping our comments to USDA.” For more information, please contact Dr. Gombas, 202-303-3411.
