United Fresh President Tom Stenzel spoke about food safety issues facing the produce industry with more than 400 attendees at the National Potato Council’s Annual Outlook Summit yesterday in Branson, MO. “Potato growers have a strong stake in food safety issues facing our industry, despite your normal cooking step which significantly reduces any risk of foodborne disease,” Tom told the group. “Growing and packing potatoes could get swept up in new legislation and regulations, and you also share in the impact of any loss of consumer confidence in the produce department overall.” Tom also commended Council CEO John Keeling for his leadership this year in lobbying for a strong Farm Bill that would serve the specialty crop industry, and thanked the members for their strong support of this effort through contacts with their legislators and financial support. “On a personal note, it was also great to see so many old friends in the potato industry,” Tom said.
