November 30, 2007

This week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), issued a revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification and a revised handbook for employers completing Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of newly hired employees. The most significant change to the Form is the elimination of five documents from List A, the list of acceptable documents. DHS is giving employers until December 26, 2007 to change their business practices and begin using these new forms (including re-verification of existing employees) before being subject to penalties. Download Form I-9 and the Employer Handbook, or access the documents by visiting the United Fresh immigration webpage. For further information, contact Autumn Veazey, United Fresh legislative director, associate counsel, 202-303-3427.
