The U.S. Senate began debate on the 2007 Farm Bill this week with expectations high among the specialty crop and fruit and vegetable sectors due to a number of key policy priorities contained in the bill passed by the Senate Agriculture Committee. But, partisan wrangling over how many amendments might be offered on the Senate floor led to an impasse, with Senators heading home for the Veterans Day holiday without an end in sight. "We are disappointed that Senate leaders have not yet found a compromise that will allow full consideration of the Farm Bill before the Thanksgiving holiday," said United Fresh President Tom Stenzel. "There are important new provisions to help the fruit and vegetable industry address critical challenges and help America’s children have a better chance to start a lifetime of healthy eating of fruits and vegetables. We must not let those opportunities pass us by," he said.
