Members of the Senate and nutrition experts held a press conference this week to promote the key nutrition programs in the Farm Bill and the impact these programs will have on children’s health. Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Robert Casey (D-PA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) emphasized that the Senate bill expands the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program to reach 5,000 elementary schools and 4.5 million children nationwide, as well as increases funding, grants and research to growers of fruits and vegetables. The four Senators were joined by Dr. Samuel Gidding, American Heart Association; Father Clarence Williams, Catholic Charities; and Registered Dietician Katherine Tallmadge, American Dietetic Association.
