The United Fresh Research & Education Foundation held its first "Training for a Recall, Communicating Under Fire" training program this week in Baltimore. The hands-on course brought together attendees throughout the supply chain, from quality assurance directors to marketing directors to CEOs. The two-day program provided a detailed account of what a company needs to do to prepare for a product recall, including both the technical and communications perspectives, FDA requirements, ways to limit company liability, and the roles that testing data can play in the recall decision. The group put their skills and knowledge to use during a mock traceability exercise and group recall scenarios. "Being unprepared for a recall is a real risk to a company's survival," said Dr. David Gombas, senior vice president of food safety and technology. Online registration for the next recall course, February 28â€"March 1 in San Francisco, is now open. For more information, contact United Fresh Education Manager, Beth Berman, 202-303-3405.
