President Bush named Ed Schafer, former governor of North Dakota, to serve as the 29th U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Schafer served as Governor from 1992 to 2000 and, in 2002, was appointed as Civilian Aide to the United States Secretary of the Army. Since 2006, Schafer has been the CEO of Extend America, a start-up wireless communications company. He is also an advisor to the North Dakota chapter of Americans for Prosperity, a nationwide limited-government/pro-growth organization. "We look forward to working with the new secretary and helping him understand our specialty crop priorities." said Robert Guenther, senior vice president of public policy at United Fresh. Once confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Secretary Schafer will replace former USDA Secretary Mike Johanns, who resigned last month to run for public office.
