Consumer Groups Launch Cooperative Food Safety Effort
November 2, 2007
A coalition of three consumer groups have formed Cooperating for Food Safety (CFS), a new nonprofit organization devoted to working cooperatively with industry and government in addressing food safety. The groups include Consumer Federation of America, National Consumers League, and Safe Tables Our Priority (S.T.O.P.). United Fresh President Tom Stenzel participated Wednesday in the first symposium sponsored by the group bringing together organizations to address best food safety practices across the meat, poultry, seafood and produce industries. Keynote speaker for the conference was Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets, who also serves as chairman of the Food Marketing Institute’s Food Safety Task Force. A number of other United Fresh members also participated, including Earthbound Farms’ Julie Morris, who spoke about food safety practices in her company. "This effort by several key consumer groups to begin working with industry more closely created a very positive atmosphere to discuss lessons we can learn across different food sectors," Tom said. "In particular, I thought the discussions between meat, seafood and produce leaders gave us all some good ideas we can take back to our own sectors."
