Public Health Support Drives Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program
October 26, 2007
While United Fresh and the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance have strongly supported expansion of the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program in the Farm Bill, the real driving force behind this major nutrition program has been overwhelming support from the public health community. On the eve of the Senate Agricultural Committee’s consideration of the Farm Bill, over 60 public health and nutrition organizations including the American Public Health Association, American Heart Association, and American Cancer Society, sent a letter to the Committee supporting the national expansion of the program to 5,000 elementary schools reaching more than 4.5 million children with a fresh fruit or vegetable snack every day at school. "This commitment from the public health community is what really made the difference in the Senate devoting significant resources from the Nutrition Title of the Farm Bill to the snack program," said Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, United Fresh vice president of nutrition and health.
