Produce industry representatives met with academic and government researchers at the National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST) conference in Chicago, IL to hear and discuss research plans for a 5-year, $2.5M project to understand key risk factors for leafy greens production. The project, funded through a competitive program by USDA Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service (CSREES), is a collaboration between researchers at University of Georgia, NCFST/FDA, Clemson University and Michigan State University, and includes a Project Steering Committee that United Fresh Senior Vice President, Food Safety and Technology Dr. David Gombas has been invited to join. "The project has been well designed to target many of the key research questions facing the leafy greens industry," said Dr. Gombas, "but the ‘devil is in the details,’ and the researchers will have to work closely with industry partners to ensure research dollars are used to address real world situations and develop real world solutions." For more information, contact Dr. David Gombas, at 202-303-3411.
