The Massachusetts Health Officers Association annual meeting featured a session on fresh produce food safety -  issues and solutions -  led by Dr. David Gombas, United Fresh senior vice president, food safety and technology.  "Fresh produce includes hundreds of individual commodities, each with its own risk profile, potential hazards and controls, and only a few of which have been implicated in foodborne illness outbreaks" said Dr. Gombas.  "Beginning with leafy greens, tomatoes and melons, the produce industry is working with all stakeholders to understand those risks, improve practices, implement compliance programs and support research that will reduce risks in ways that are effective, commodity-specific and consistent with actual fresh produce production, handling and processing conditions."
