The long-awaited WIC Food Package rule, anticipated to add fruits and vegetables to WIC for the first time, is one step closer to reality. On August 23, the proposed rule finally made it to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for clearance. "Although Nancy Montanez-Johner, USDA's undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services, and Father Douglas Greenaway, executive director of the National WIC Association, are optimistic that the final rule may be published by the end of September, the OMB has 90 days to complete the clearance process," said Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, vice president nutrition and health at United Fresh. "This means that some time between the end of September and the end of November 2007, this process, which started almost 10 years ago, will be finished and WIC moms and kids will finally have access to fruits and vegetables," said Dr. DiSogra.
