President's Cancer Panel Highlights United Fresh's Nutrition Goals
August 24, 2007
A new report issued by the President's Cancer Panel calls on the federal government to cease being a purveyor of unhealthy food and to support policies that encourage Americans to eat fruits and vegetables and exercise more. The panel's annual report, "Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: Policy, Programs, and Personal Recommendations for Reducing Cancer Risk," goes further than previous reports in calling for the federal government to take decisive action now. "The Obesity, Diet and Nutrition chapter in this report repeatedly notes that provisions of the Farm Bill will have a profound effect on foods served in school breakfast/lunch and in other child nutrition programs," said Lorelei DiSogra, United Fresh's vice president of nutrition and health. "The Report specifically cites HR 1600 - The EAT Healthy America Act, supported by the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance, and the expansion of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program as model legislation that would expand availability of fresh fruits and vegetables for children and improve the overall food environment in schools." The President's Cancer Panel is made up of representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services and distinguished scientists from around the country who are selected by the White House to serve on this advisory panel. The panel advises the President on how to reduce cancer. For more information please contact Lorelei DiSogra.
