Public Health Groups Lobby for Farm Bill Nutrition Priorities
August 10, 2007
For the first time, public health organizations are engaging in the Farm Bill debate specifically to ensure that healthy diet priorities are included in the 2007 Farm Bill. This week the American Public Health Association, American Heart Association, Trust for America's Health, the Johns Hopkins University's School of Public Health, and the National Association of City/County Health Officers joined forces with United Fresh and other nutrition organizations in meetings with Senate leadership and members of the Senate Finance Committee. "It's fantastic to have public health leaders adding their credibility and support to our nutrition priorities, including national expansion of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, increased funding for DoD Fresh, and public health approaches in Food Stamp Nutrition Education", said Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, vice president of nutrition and health at United Fresh. "It is time for our agriculture policy to better align with our nation's health policy, and these organizations are inspired to keep pushing throughout the Farm Bill process."
