Later today United Fresh President Tom Stenzel, Senior Vice President, Public Policy Robert Guenther and members of the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance will meet with USDA Secretary Mike Johanns to discuss progress thus far in Congressional efforts to include major new support for specialty crops in the 2007 Farm Bill.  "We appreciate Secretary Johanns' support and recognition that Congress must address the competitive needs of specialty crops, which account for 50 percent of farm cash receipts," said Guenther, who also serves as Secretariat for the Alliance on behalf of United Fresh.  "While the House Agriculture Committee is taking small steps forward, we remain disappointed that more members of the Committee do not recognize that this next Farm Bill must be a Farm Bill to serve all of America, not just a chosen few. Dramatically increasing support for fruits and vegetables will be critical to winning Congressional support from urban and suburban House members, and thus is critical to passing any Farm Bill this year," he said.  For more information, contact Robert Guenther at (202) 303-3409.
