Washington, D.C. - Registration is now open for the annual United Fresh Washington Public Policy Conference (WPPC), the premier produce industry event in Washington DC. The conference will be held September 12-14 at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Hotel.
During this multi-day event, attendees will hear from top level administration officials and meet with congressional delegates and key Washington leaders on an array of issues affecting the produce industry, including the Farm Bill, immigration reform, federal food safety requirements, the WIC program, USDA’s Fruit and Vegetable Pilot program, and country of origin labeling.
“Now, more than ever, it is imperative that every person and company in the produce industry come to Washington to provide input on these key issues,” said Robert Guenther United Fresh senior vice president of public policy. “What happens on Capitol Hill in the next six to nine months, in terms of the Farm Bill, food safety requirements and health and nutrition policy, will have an impact on the entire produce industry for years to come.”
WPPC attendees will come together for a welcome reception on Wednesday, Sept 12, after an afternoon Advocacy & Grassroots Seminar that will prepare industry members for the March on Capitol Hill the next day. On Thursday, following an afternoon of congressional meetings on Capitol Hill, Members of Congress, staff, regulatory officials, and friends of the produce industry will relax at the ever-popular Fresh Festival. Friday, attendees will select between a White House briefing, Crisis Communications Workshop and a Sights and Sound Tour of a Washington landmark before the closing luncheon session.
Last year, the WPPC event attracted nearly 300 growers, shippers, retailers, wholesalers, and distributors of produce from around the country. According to Guenther, “WPPC attendance has grown in record numbers and with all the key policy issues facing the produce industry, 2007 will be no different.”
Registration is open at http://www.unitedfresh.org/ and first-time attendees receive a special discount. Conference information and a PDF of the registration form are also available on the United Fresh website, or contact United Fresh Government Relations Assistant Elizabeth Fiveash at efiveash@unitedfresh.org, (202) 303-3402.
