Today in a briefing with the business community, agriculture leaders, and key supporters of the Senate immigration reform bill, President Bush called on the Senate to continue its work to reform our nation's immigration laws, and asked supporters to keep up their efforts to pass this historic piece of legislation. Robert Guenther, senior vice president of public policy for United Fresh, attended the meeting. "The president is committed to seeing that immigration reform becomes a reality," Guenther stated after the meeting. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff joined the President at the meeting. Earlier this week, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns held a similar briefing with agriculture leaders to reiterate the Administration's support for reform. "It is clear that this legislative endeavor is the only path to achieving much needed reforms in our immigration laws and still protect our borders, secure a workable guestworker program, and develop a system to address the current 12 million undocumented workers living in the U.S," said Guenther. "We will not see another chance like this for several years. Everyone in the industry needs to be a part of the grassroots movement behind reform," Guenther concluded.
