Major Newspapers Report on Potential for New Food Safety Regulation
May 18, 2007
The day after the House of Representatives food safety hearing, The Wall Street Journal and New York Times both reported individually about continuing consideration by Congress and within the Food and Drug Administration of potential new food safety regulations, some dealing specifically with produce. Both papers reported on continuing discussion in Congress of overall food safety regulatory reform. The Journal specifically reported that FDA is considering "a wide variety of options" with regard to produce safety standards. United Fresh President Tom Stenzel told the Journal that "there's an urgency for the Administration to act," and that industry would prefer "the scientists at the regulatory agencies to draft the rules, rather than politicians." The Journal suggested that FDA was considering a "preventive-control regulation," likely tailored to different industry sectors.
