Delivering a major grassroots push at exactly the right time, more than 160 industry leaders gathered on Capitol Hill this week to urge lawmakers to help agriculture secure a legal and stable workforce. The immigration reform campaign kicked off on Tuesday, with Senators Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Larry Craig (R-ID) holding a press conference to discuss the importance of including AgJOBS in a comprehensive immigration reform package, which made the front page of the Washington Post and numerous media outlets. United Fresh President Tom Stenzel emceed the press conference, which included five producer representatives along with the Senators. United Fresh Past Chairman Maureen Torrey Marshall, Torrey Farms, joined representatives of the U.S. Apple Association, Western Growers, National Council of Ag Employers and Agricultural Coalition for Immigration reform at the event. On Wednesday, industry leaders visited more than 140 Congressional offices to urge support of an agricultural solution in the bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform package being considered in the Senate. "Our voice was heard loud and clear throughout the halls of Congress," said Robert Guenther, United Fresh senior vice president of public policy."
