The Washington Post this week reported on the increased power of the fruit and vegetable industry in shaping the 2007 Farm Bill. The Post interviewed United Fresh Senior Vice President of Public Policy Robert Guenther to learn how the industry was working together to drive increased funding for research, block grants to states and promotion of U.S.-grown produce abroad as part of the Farm Bill. The story examined the growing influence of the produce industry in "farm politics," a realm traditionally dominated by the wheat, corn, cotton, sugar and rice industries. Lobbyists for the American Farm Bureau Federation and National Corn Growers Association credited the fruit and vegetable industry for taking a prominent role in the Farm Bill's development.
