School Leaders Highlight Benefits of Fruit & Vegetable Program to Congress
May 11, 2007
Educational leaders from Texas, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin joined United Fresh on Capitol Hill this week to share how the fresh fruit and vegetable snack program is increasing consumption of fresh produce. During two congressional briefings on addressing childhood obesity in the 2007 Farm Bill, a school superintendent and two nutrition directors highlighted how the fruit and vegetable snack program is improving the health of their students and their families. "These leaders really demonstrated how the fruit and vegetable program has been a catalyst for change in creating healthier school environments," said Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, United Fresh vice president of nutrition and health. "These passionate advocates sent a powerful message to our nation's legislators about the importance of national expansion of the program in the 2007 Farm Bill during both meetings with their congressional delegations and as part of congressional briefings." Special thanks to Texas Citrus Mutual and Texas Fresh Vegetable Association who arranged additional meetings with the Texas Congressional delegation to discuss the benefits of the program.
