Legislation Introduced to Improve Competitiveness of U.S. Produce Exports
March 30, 2007
Members of the House Ways and Means Committee this week introduced a trade bill aimed at improving U.S. export competitiveness for the fruit and vegetable industry. Reps. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) introduced the legislation in response to concerns by American farmers that current trade policies have failed to maximize the benefits of global trade liberalization. "We commend Reps. Nunes and Thompson for their efforts to address a growing concern within the specialty crop industry," said Autumn Veazey, United Fresh legislative director and associate counsel. "We are hopeful that more efforts like this will be made to help expand our markets abroad and close the gap between what our industry imports exports."
