United Fresh President Tom Stenzel and Senior Vice President of Food Safety & Technology Dr. Jim Gorny updated 200 attendees on produce safety issues at a National Restaurant Association Produce Safety & Foodservice Conference this week in Monterey, CA. The meeting of restaurant operators, produce suppliers, food safety experts, scientists and government officials examined all facets of produce safety and set the stage for restaurant industry professionals to work with suppliers and government to enhance produce safety. United Fresh, along with representatives of PMA and Western Growers, discussed all aspects of how the produce industry is taking steps to enhance the safety of fresh produce. Stenzel provided an in-depth update from a national perspective regarding anticipated federal and state, regulatory and legislative initiatives. Dr. Gorny discussed development and implementation of commodity specific GAP food safety best practices in the produce industry. "This meeting provided an excellent opportunity for numerous stakeholders from farm to fork to discuss and coordinate our many actions and activities to enhance the safety of produce," said Dr. Gorny.
