United Fresh Applauds Introduction of Bipartisan Immigration Reform
March 23, 2007
On Thursday, Reps. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ark.) announced the introduction of new legislation designed to reform problems with the country's immigration system. According to the bills sponsors, The Security Through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy (STRIVE) Act of 2007 would overhaul the immigration system in a way that "better protects and enforces our borders, respects the hard work and contributions of immigrants to our country and reflects the realities of our workforce and the needs of our communities." The proposed legislation also incorporates provisions outlined in the AgJOBs legislation introduced earlier this year in the House and Senate. "We applaud Reps. Gutierrez and Flake for taking a positive step toward achieving comprehensive immigration reform," said Robert Guenther, United Fresh's senior vice president of public policy. "Incorporated into the STRIVE Act are key policy provisions found in the AgJOBS bill, such as adjusting the status of current illegal workers and providing a realistic temporary worker program. These provisions are important for our labor intensive industry to survive and are an essential part of achieving comprehensive reform."
