Dr. David Gombas, United Fresh vice president of scientific and technical affairs, spoke this week at the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety annual meeting on "GAPs to Assure the Microbiological Safety of Fresh Produce." Following his presentation, he participated in a question and answer panel on fresh produce food safety, alongside representatives from CDC and FDA. "Whether we're discussing leafy greens, tomatoes or other fresh produce susceptible to pathogen contamination, improvements in food safety efforts will be based on a combination of best practices, compliance and research," Dr. Gombas told the audience. "We must ensure that the limited resources available to the industry are targeted to those actions most likely to improve safety and consumer confidence, and not diverted to activities that sound good, but are not scientifically supported."
