United Fresh Staff Experts Speak at Mushroom, Watermelon Conferences; Tennessee Food Safety Task Force
February 23, 2007
This week, United Fresh staff participated in three separate food safety discussions across the country. On Tuesday, Dr. Jim Gorny, senior vice president of food safety & technology, took part in a panel discussion at the North American Mushroom Conference in San Diego, Calif. The program focused on ways the mushroom industry can assure product safety during production, processing, distribution and handling. On Wednesday, Robert Guenther, senior vice president of public policy, spoke to the National Watermelon Association in Asheville, N.C. about federal food safety oversight for the fresh produce industry. Rounding out a busy week, Vice President of Marketing and Industry Relations Amy Philpott spoke to several hundred public health officials, regulators and quality assurance directors from foodservice and retail throughout the South at a conference held by the Tennessee Food Safety Task Force in Nashville, Tenn. "It's very clear that many regional and commodity produce groups want to hear a national perspective on ways we can all work together to advance food safety efforts," said Philpott. "It's gratifying that our association's technical and policy leaders are being sought out to discuss food safety at so many of these important events," she said.
