United Fresh President Tom Stenzel spoke to the New Jersey Agricultural Convention on Feb. 13, 2007 about food safety issues affecting the produce industry and United Fresh's work to ensure strong federal standards for produce safety. Stenzel, speaking to the approximately 500 New Jersey agriculture leaders in Atlantic City, N.J. for their annual convention, emphasized the need for such standards to be commodity-specific, science based, and uniform for both domestic and imported product. "New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Charles Kuperus has done a great job serving this industry, and the state's fruit and vegetable growers are showing strong leadership in tackling tough food safety issues," Stenzel said. The convention addressed a number of business issues affecting New Jersey agriculture and passed a resolution in support of strong food safety measure. Stenzel also congratulated 23-year Department of Agriculture veteran Al Murray, who was named Assistant Secretary of Agriculture shortly before the convention.
