Chairman of the United Fresh Government Relations Council, Mike Wootton, Sunkist Growers, and members of the Council assembled this week in Washington, D.C. to discuss current policies and legislative issues for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry. The two-day meeting focused on reform of immigration laws, increasing fruits and vegetables in the WIC program, tackling food safety concerns, and shaping the 2007 Farm Bill. "This council plays both a strategic and tactical role for the association," said Robert Guenther, United Fresh senior vice president of public policy. "This group brings together many association allies who represent broad constituencies, as well as produce company representatives who bring an important business perspective to government relations issues." As part of the group's efforts in Washington, Council members met with key policy leaders, including Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Connor, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN), House Agriculture Subcommittee Chairman Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), several key Congressional staff members from the House and Senate, and representatives of the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and Government Accountability Office. For more information about the council, please contact Robert Guenther at (202) 303-3409.
