WASHINGTON, D.C. - Texas schools can apply to receive free salad bars from Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools by applying at www.saladbars2schools.org. Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools is a public health initiative that donates salad bars to schools across the country to help improve child nutrition through increased fruit and vegetable consumption. The program supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to end childhood obesity in a generation.

With current rates of childhood obesity in Texas significantly higher than the national average, the United Fresh Foundation, a founding partner of Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools, is raising funds to purchase salad bars for Texas schools. United Fresh urges parents, educators and school nutrition professionals to take advantage of this opportunity to improve students’ access to fresh, healthful fruits and vegetables.

“Salad bars are one of the easiest ways for schools to meet the new national school lunch nutrition standards, which call for doubling the amount of fruits and vegetables served every day at lunch,” says Lorelei DiSogra Ed.D., R.D., vice president, nutrition and health for the United Fresh Produce Association.

Any K-12 school or school district participating in the National School Lunch Program is invited to apply. Schools can visit the Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools website (www.saladbars2schools.org) to learn more and submit an application. All applications must be submitted online and have the approval of the school’s foodservice director, superintendent and principal. An individual school may apply for one salad bar or a district may apply for the total number of salad bars needed. Schools recognized as HealthierUS Challenge Schools are given top priority.

The Foundation has set a goal to donate salad bars to 100 Texas schools as part of its commitment to improving children’s health, as well as to commemorate United Fresh hosting its 2012 convention in Dallas, May 1-3. In the past year, 147 Texas schools and more than 1,100 schools nationwide have received salad bars from Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools.
