United Fresh Vice President of Scientific and Technical Affairs Dr. David Gombas participated in a meeting last week with University of Nebraska animal health scientists who are conducting tests on a new vaccine to prevent E.coli O157:H7 infection in cattle. Thus far, tests have been conducted on more than 25,000 cattle, with promising results. "The food safety challenges to our industry posed by pathogens in the environment will require a multi-level faceted response," said Dr. Gombas. "This research into controlling and reducing the presence of E.coli O157:H7 from cattle is an important step forward, and we encourage speedy government review and approval of these types of new animal drugs," he said.
