At his year-end press conference this week, President Bush was optimistic about the chances for passing comprehensive immigration reform working with the Democrat-controlled Congress in 2007. "We're very encouraged that we may finally have a good chance to pass legislation to provide a stable and legal workforce for the fruit and vegetable industry," said United Senior Vice President for Public Policy Robert Guenther. "Many leaders in the new Congress have supported comprehensive reform in the past, and we believe there may now be political support on both sides of the aisle to do something positive to address this crisis. For our industry, the crisis continues to spread as labor shortages affected production in many areas of the country this summer, and are now limiting winter harvest of crops. We're encouraging key Members of Congress to place immigration reform at the top of their agendas during this window of opportunity," he said.
