The Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers raided six Swift plants on Tuesday, temporarily closing the plants and arresting 1,200 of the company's employees. Sixty-five of those employees now face criminal charges. Swift officials said they have tried to comply with legal hiring procedures, noting they are one of a small number of firms using a federal program that checks employee identity documents against a database. The raid follows Swift's testimony last June before the House subcommittee in which company officials said the government database was plagued with flaws. "The government's emphasis on enforcement, going out and targeting specific companies, or specific sectors, is putting a real strain on U.S. businesses," said Robert Guenther, United Fresh senior vice president of public policy. "It's time for Congress to put forth a comprehensive immigration policy that includes a realistic approach to the undocumented workforce and places reasonable requirements on the business sector when dealing with the employment verification process."
