United Fresh Co-Chairman of the Board, Maureen Marshall, Torrey Farms, shared her views on the current and future challenges for the U.S. vegetable and fruit industry during the keynote address at the 21st Annual Southeast Vegetable and Fruit Expo in Myrtle Beach, SC on Wednesday. Marshall discussed the need for enacting comprehensive immigration reform, securing a specialty crop title in the 2007 Farm Bill, and encouraging more youth to become involved in the produce industry. "The number one challenge we face as an industry right now is having a viable work force," said Marshall. "This has to be stable so the next generations continue our American agriculture tradition." Marshall also stressed the importance of being active in the industry at the state and national level. The Southeast Vegetable and Fruit Expo is hosted annually by the North Carolina Vegetable Growers Association and the South Carolina Vegetable Growers Association.
